THE VOTE IS IN: CONROE RANKS IN U-HAUL’S TOP 25

As the calendar year turned to 2023, U-Haul reported that Texas, Florida and the Carolinas ended up at the top of its one-way destination list for 2022. Texas took the top spot, which it also claimed in 2021. According to a release from the company, DIY movers coming to Texas accounted for nearly 50.3% of all one-way U-Haul truck traffic, both in and out of the state.

Furthermore, Conroe, TX earned the 19th spot on U-Haul’s Top 25 Growth Cities of 2022. The reasons for these high rankings included a low cost of living, no state income tax and deregulated energy costs. According to the Conroe Economic Development Council, Conroe’s modern, business-friendly atmosphere appeals to many industries. Furthermore, a “strong quality of place” appeals to individuals, making the metro one of the fastest-growing in the United States.

“Conroe has grown dramatically because it offers what modern businesses need: a strong labor force, attractive quality of life and desirable location,” said Conroe Economic Development Council Executive Director Danielle Scheiner.

In addition to U-Haul, financial website SmartAsset ranked Conroe sixth on its “Top Boomtowns in America — 2022” listing. SmartAsset analyzed data of 494 cities, taking note of population changes, annual GDP growth, unemployment rate changes and number of housing units.

“Conroe ranks highest in five-year housing growth,” the study said. “The city’s population is also growing, increasing by 14.7% (between 2016 and 2021). SmartAsset also indicated that Conroe is located in Montgomery County, which ranked in the top 30 for annual GDP and business growth rates.

A 2022 article in Site Selection Magazine noted the many attractions of Conroe, including its music and restaurant scene, safe streets, the historic charm of Downtown Conroe and Lake Conroe. Conroe is also unique in that it offers plenty of housing and up-to-date infrastructure.

“Conroe is in the path of growth from Houston,” Conroe mayor Jody Czajkoski told Site Selection. “This community will be the northern anchor of what will be the Houston-Conroe Metroplex. Conroe is the only city left that has land to grow.”
